Why we should care
Buildings account for approximately 50% of all CO2 emissions in the UK and are by far the biggest contributor to the greenhouse effect. BREEAM offers a methodology for both building designers and managers to ascertain their buildings’ environmental performance and to seek appropriate improvements. A building with good environmental credentials will provide improved conditions for occupants and improved energy efficiency.
- Construction and demolition waste represents 19% of total UK waste.
- The energy used in constructing, occupying and operating buildings represents approximately 50% of greenhouse gas emissions in the UK.
- 35% of raw materials used in UK construction are thrown away as waste.
- The manufacturing and transporting of construction products consumes an energy equivalent to eight million tonnes of oil.
- The construction sector uses over 420 million tonnes of material resources and converts 6,500 hectares of land from rural to urban use annually.
- Construction and demolition is responsible for creating 21% of the UK’s hazardous waste.
- About 10% of national energy consumption is used in the production and transportation of construction products and materials.

- Over 90% of the worlds 1.2 billion poorest people depend on forests for some part of their livelihood. Global forest decreased by 4% from 1990 - 2000.
- The cost of wasted natural resources to UK manufacturing is equivalent to around 7% of profit. Energy efficiency improvements by business and individuals could save the UK £12 billion annually.
- More than 80% of all product related environmental impacts are determined by product design.
